2011年04月23日 Japanese Hornets!

April 23, 2011

Screaming like a little bitch!
On a hot & sunny day last week while hanging my laundry on the balcony of my new place, I notice from above something hovering. I look up to see the starts of a nest! Not just any nest, but a hornet’s nest! And not just any hornets, but the biggest they come — the Japanese hornet or (suzumebachi). I’ve never seen them before so I’m freaking out cause they are quite big for what they are.

Ignorantly I decided that I can try to get rid of them (with much reluctance) seeing there were only a few. I got one of those bathtub scrubbers on a stick and managed to kill one to later find out that this could set of all the hornets into attack mode. I go on Google to see what else I can do. I found this one method with the vacuum cleaner, which seemed safe enough where I could keep my distance. LOL it was a good idea at the time. So in my first and last attempt I try to vacuum the bitches… total fail! They got angry and flew off… I panicked, fell over the vacuum and in an attempt to escape busted a hole in the screen door while trying to close the glass door. ^^

I decided to get help from the people who take care of my place as the office is right down the street. In my broken Japanese I tried to explain the situation. The lady I always deal with is sooo funny; she starts yelling “We need suzume-busters!” Everyone is just laughing cause suzume on it’s own means sparrow. Then she starts telling my about some story about how she got stung by bees in Hawaii on her neck. She always has interesting stories and whenever I go over she has a bag of something to give me. Last time was a bag of oranges and this time around a bag of senbei.

Anyways we drive over to my place with some spray and spray the nest. For now they’re gone, but I fear they may come back. As for now, I’m nervous and hesitant to go on my balcony to hang laundry. :S

2011年04月11日 The Arashi Thief

April 11, 2011

Arashi I Thee!
Well not really… I’m not a fan of Arashi, but they are kind of a big deal in Japan. Arashi is a popular Japanese idol group with numerous albums, drama and movie appearances and of course endorsements.

In recent days they can be seen all over the place advertising for Nintendo and for the popular mobile network au. They had a bunch of ad campaigns for Android au where I heard they broke 3 Guiness records earlier this year:

  • Most versions of commercials for the same product within 24 hours on terrestrial broadcasting
  • Most versions of commercials for the same product within 8 hours on paid channel
  • Most versions of commercials for the same product during a 30 minutes-long TV program

One of the many Android au commercials featuring the members of Arashi. Japanese commercial last usually 15 seconds as opposed to North American commercials which usually last 30 seconds.

My friend (who I will refer to as Ms. Musashi) is a big fan and during this time they were advertising a great deal on the trains.  She took it upon herself to collect the whole set of print advertisements.. of course this took time and coming home from a party together she took it upon herself to collect yet another ad. A true fan indeed! ^_~

Strategically sitting down next to the prize.

Sliding it out of the case. I learned that on occasion the casing can come with a locking mechanism. Only a thief would know that. LOL

The prize is obtained. Time to get off at the next station. :P

2011年04月04日 Trying to Get Back to Normal

Trying to Get Back to Normal
Sorry for the lack of blogging. After the earthquake I was dealing with a whole lot of stuff — Moving apartments,  job stress and not-to-mention the constant reminder that Tokyo life is far from back to normal with shortages of varies foods and goods. Oh and did I mention the radiation?

I want to say that life is getting back to normal and to some extent it is. But you can’t help but think about the what ifs. To my friends and family thank you for your messages and concerns. I want to reiterate that I am fine and I hope for things here in Japan to get better soon. In the meantime, in Tokyo, life goes on and we do our best to do so as well. There is a lot of paranoia, hearsay and there is a lot of information floating around. It’s hard to sift through it all. If things do get worse then I’ll deal with it when I cross that bridge. In the meantime, I’m set to live my life as normal as possible again. I’m done stressing.
